Quick Study: REITs Keep Pace With Broader Market in November
In the latest edition of Quick Study, Brad Case, NAREIT’s senior vice president for research and industry information, reviewed market gains in November and longer-term trends in the REIT sector.
The total returns on the FTSE NAREIT All REITs Index were 2.3 percent for November. While returns on the S&P 500 Index rose 2.7 percent last month, Case noted that REITs outperformed small and mid-sized companies.
For the year through Nov. 28, the FTSE NAREIT All REITs Index was up 25.8 percent, compared with a 14 percent gain for the S&P 500 Index.

Bigman discussed the approach investors should take when considering global property stocks as a portion of multi-asset portfolios.
“First and foremost, they should look at them as real estate… Their returns over the medium- and long-term should track real estate,” Bigman said. Within the real estate sector, investors should view global property stocks as core real estate, he added.

Investment Strategist Highlights Fundamentals Driving REIT Share Gains

Mueller stressed that job growth has been a key indicator for real estate investors to consider. He explained that in 2014, average monthly employment growth averaged more than 200,000 jobs, compared with about 100,000 per month in the prior few years.
Fundamentally Speaking: Construction Activity Rising Across U.S.
In the latest edition of Fundamentally Speaking, Calvin Schnure, NAREIT’s vice president for research and industry information, looked at the increase in commercial construction activity and its impact on the real estate market.
Schnure observed that an increase in commercial construction has been evident “across the board,” with third quarter commercial construction spending 16 percent higher than a year ago.
Holiday Shopping Season Starting Earlier, Cedar Realty CEO Says
Bruce Schanzer, president and CEO of retail REIT Cedar Realty Trust (NYSE: CDR), previewed the holiday shopping season on the latest edition of the NAREIT Podcast.
Schanzer said his company is forecasting a “modest” year-over-year increase in holiday spending of approximately 3 percent. He added that Cedar Realty expects consumers to remain price-sensitive this year.
