BMO Analyst Says Capital Markets Receptive to REITs

Paul Adornato, managing director with BMO Capital Markets, joined REIT.com for a video interview during REITWeek 2014: NAREIT’s Investor Forum, held in New York.

Adornato reviewed the conditions that REITs have faced within the capital markets so far this year.

“The capital markets have been open for the REITs both on the equity side and on the debt side,” Adornato stated.  On the equity side, large follow-on offerings have occurred this year, he said, in addition to a number of initial public offerings (IPOs).

Investment Strategist Pleasantly Surprised by Health Care, Net Lease REIT Sectors

Tim Pire, managing director with Heitman, joined REIT.com for a video interview during REITWeek 2014: NAREIT’s Investor Forum, held in New York. Pire serves as chief investment strategist of Heitman’s global real estate securities group.

Looking at the performance of the REIT market, Pire said the health care and triple-net lease REIT sectors represent pleasant surprises in their performances in 2014. Pire attributed some of their success to interest rates trending lower than expected.

Drew Sims, chairman and CEO of SoTHERLY Hotels Inc. (NASDAQ: SOHO), joined REIT.com for a CEO Spotlight video interview during REITWeek 2014: NAREIT’s Investor Forum, held in New York.

Following a quiet period for acquisitions in the period from 2008 until late 2013, the company recently closed on two transactions. Sims was asked how those deals came about and whether they are a sign of more activity to come.

Green Street Analyst Sees Solid Fundamentals in Industrial REIT Sector

Eric Frankel, analyst at Green Street Advisors, joined REIT.com for a video interview during REITWeek 2014: NAREIT’s Investor Forum, held in New York.

Frankel discussed developments in the industrial REIT sector during the first half of the year. Industrial fundamentals have been good for the past few years, said Frankel, noting that the recovery in the industrial sector started relatively slowly when the economy first began to improve about four years ago.

“It’s been pretty smooth sailing,” he observed.

Former NAREIT President Arthur Viner Dies at Age 92

Former NAREIT Board of Governors President Arthur Viner, who founded REIT sponsor Investors Central  Management Corp. , died June 19 at the age of 92.

Viner’s tenure at Investors Central Management Corp., which sponsored three REITs that were listed on the New York Stock Exchange, ran from 1958 to 1991. He held the positions of president and CEO of the company during that period.

Banar covers U.S. real estate companies for Forum Securities. Additionally, she advises the firm’s global portfolio management team. Banar joined Forum Securities in April after serving as a portfolio manager with The Tuckerman Group, an affiliate of State Street Global Advisors that focused on real estate investment.

American Residential Execs Single-Family Home Acquisitions to Continue

The executive team of single-family housing REIT American Residential Properties (NYSE: ARPI), president and COO Laurie Hawkes and chairman and CEO Stephen Schmitz, joined REIT.com for a video interview during REITWeek 2014: NAREIT’s Investor Forum, held in New York.

American Residential acquired 700 homes in the first quarter of the year. Schmitz talked about the pace of transactions in the quarter and the likelihood it would hold up going forward.

“We think that’s a well-measured pace,” Schmitz said.
