Tim Mihalick, president and CEO of Investors Real Estate Trust (NYSE: IRET), joined REIT.com for a CEO Spotlight video interview at REITWeek 2016: NAREIT’s Investor Forum at the Waldorf Astoria New York.

The company announced earlier this month that it would exit the health care and industrial markets in order to become a pure-play multifamily REIT based in the Midwest.  In 2015, it disposed of its office and retail assets.

CubeSmart is one of the largest owners and operators of self-storage facilities in the United States.

Marr discussed the factors driving organic growth at CubeSmart. He pointed to the lack of any significant new supply since the financial crisis, as well as the growing urbanization of the U.S.

Activist Investors “Fact of Life” in Real Estate Now, Cicco Says

Marty Cicco, senior managing director at Evercore, joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWeek 2016: NAREIT’s Investor Forum at the Waldorf Astoria New York.

Evercore is an independent investment banking advisory firm.

Cicco said he expects activist shareholders to continue to play a role in the commercial real estate sector. “It’s a fact of life in the public markets going forward,” he said.

Cicco also discussed the slowdown in the issuance of REIT preferred shares.

Real Estate Disrupters Will Create Opportunities, Analyst Says

Joi Mar, real estate analytics analyst at Green Street Advisors, joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWeek 2016: NAREIT’s Investor Forum at the Waldorf Astoria New York.

Mar commented on the work Green Street has been conducting on real estate disrupters. She noted that many of the potential disrupters Green Street is studying, including e-commerce, driverless cars, ride-sharing platforms and Airbnb, are long term in nature. As a result, these disrupters are often not reflected in seven-year internal rate of return (IRR) models.

Ed Fritsch, 2016 NAREIT Chair and president and CEO of Highwoods Properties, Inc. (NYSE: HIW), joined REIT.com for a CEO Spotlight video interview at REITWeek 2016: NAREIT’s Investor Forum at the Waldorf Astoria New York.

Half-way through his term as 2016 NAREIT Chair, Fritsch observed that fundamentals across the REIT industry are “healthy.”

“Balance sheets are improved, dividends are fortified (and) interest in investment is strong,” he noted.
