REITs Fall 3.5 Percent in January

In the latest edition of Quick Study, Brad Case, NAREIT’s senior vice president for research and industry information, said that despite a difficult month for all investors in January, REIT investors fared relatively well.

The total returns of the FTSE/NAREIT All REIT Index fell 3.5 percent in January. In the broader market, however, large cap stocks lost 5.0 percent, small cap value stocks lost 6.7 percent, and small cap growth stocks lost nearly 11 percent, Case observed.

GGP Investing in Solar, HVAC, Lighting Initiatives

Brian Montague, senior vice president for energy and sustainability at General Growth Properties, Inc. (NYSE: GGP), joined REIT.com for a video interview at NAREIT’s 2016 Leader in the Light Working Forum at the Ritz Carlton – Coconut Grove in Miami.

Montague noted that GGP faces unique sustainability challenges as many of the malls in its portfolio were built in the 1970’s to 1990’s. “There’s a lot of old infrastructure, but we look at that as a positive,” Montague said.

Prologis was the industrial sector winner of the 2015 NAREIT Leader in the Light Awards. Renne-Malone noted that Prologis has won the Leader in the Light award for four consecutive years.
