Physicians Realty was an active acquirer of properties in 2016. During the year, the company closed on a $ 700 million deal that Thomas described as “the largest transaction ever in the medical office space.”

Tait described overall investor interest in private REITs as “terrific.” She said Broadstone is raising equity every month on a regular basis at levels that are on par with the best the company has ever seen.
“I don’t expect that to change,” she commented.
REIT returns fell in November, as gains in long-term interest rates continued to put downward pressure on the sector, market watchers said.
The total returns of the FTSE/NAREIT All REIT Index dropped 2.0 percent in November, while the S&P 500 index gained 3.7 percent. Total returns of the FTSE/NAREIT All Equity Index fell 2.4 percent in November, while total returns of the FTSE NAREIT Mortgage REITs Index gained 1.7 percent.

After a quiet year for the health care sector for most of 2016, an “explosion of deals” worth in excess of $ 5 billion has occurred recently, Knott observed. The trend underscores the significant amount of capital available for the sector, especially foreign capital, he noted.

Churchey said external growth through on-campus development is “our most exciting opportunity.” Demand is coming from universities that are running low on funds and have aging housing stock that needs to be upgraded to recruit new students, he explained.
