Levy spoke at REITWise 2016 on the state of the real estate markets. One of the most important trends among “big occupiers” in the commercial real estate market today is talent acquisition, according to Levy.
REITs Playing Leading Role in Development, Deloitte Analyst Says
Bob O’Brien, partner and U.S. real estate services leader at Deloitte, joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWise 2016: NAREIT’s Law, Accounting and Finance Conference at the Marriott Marquis in Washington, D.C.
O’Brien said he is seeing an increase in development activity for apartment buildings, office buildings, hotels and distribution facilities.
“REITs are playing a big role in development activity,” O’Brien said.

In the latest episode of the NAREIT Podcast, Joi Mar, analyst for real estate analytics with Green Street Advisors, discussed trends in real estate asset valuations.
Mar said that despite signs of a healthy economy in the United States, the market is giving off “mixed signals.” Although the employment picture bodes well, the strength of the dollar, concerns about China and fluctuations in the energy sector are weighing on economic growth, according to Mar.
Real Estate Fundamentals in “Great Shape,” Says Analyst
Chris Lucas, a REIT analyst and senior managing director at Capital One, joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWorld 2015: NAREIT’s Annual Convention for All Things REIT at the Wynn Las Vegas.
Real estate fundamentals are in “great shape,” according to Lucas: New development is under control, and demand remains fairly consistent across all the property types.
“We’re optimistic about where things are. Obviously there are selected markets where there may be some imbalances, but the bottom line is that things are pretty good,” Lucas said.
Analyst Explains “Healthy Skepticism” Toward REIT Development
Jed Reagan, senior analyst at Green Street Advisors, joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWorld 2015: NAREIT’s Annual Convention for All Things REIT at the Wynn Las Vegas.
Reagan gave an overview of how Green Street sees development in the REIT industry.
“Green Street has a healthy skepticism about the development business. It’s a business that when it works, it can work in a big way, but there are definitely risks that come along with development that can be underappreciated sometimes,” Reagan said.
Moody’s Analyst Says REIT Credit Profiles Stable
Merrie Frankel, vice president and senior credit officer at Moody’s Investors Service, joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWorld 2015: NAREIT’s Annual Convention for All Things REIT at the Wynn Las Vegas.
Frankel discussed the outlook for REITs raising capital through unsecured debt. She noted that as of mid-November, REITs had issued $ 28 billion of unsecured debt, compared with about $ 31 billion for all of 2014.
REIT Analyst Sees Interest Rates, Privatizations Remaining on Radar
David Toti, managing director and senior equity research analyst in the real estate group of BB&T Capital Markets, joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWorld 2015: NAREIT’s Annual Convention for All Things REIT at the Wynn Las Vegas.
Toti was asked whether interest rates will continue to be a key topic of conversation for REITs in 2016.
“Absolutely. Interest rates will always be part of the conversation of an asset that is levered, particularly after a very long period of ultra-low rates because of global liquidity forces,” Toti responded.
Evercore ISI REIT Research Team Tops Analyst Rankings
Evercore ISI Group took first place honors in Institutional Investor magazine’s annual awards honoring the top REIT analyst teams.
The eight-member Evercore ISI team is led by Stephen Sakwa. ISI, which Evercore acquired in October 2014, held the top spot from 2010 to 2014.
Second place was awarded to the 11-member team at Citi, led by Michael Bilerman. This is the sixth consecutive year the Citi team has held second place.
Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s 10-member team, led by Jeffrey Spector, took third place for the third consecutive year.
