REITs “Appropriately Valued” Versus Equities and Bonds, Analyst Says

John Guinee, managing director at Stifel Nicolaus, joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWeek 2016: NAREIT’s Investor Forum at the Waldorf Astoria New York.

Guinee discussed the valuation of REITs relative to the broader equity and bond markets. According to Guinee, REITs are “appropriately valued right now.”

Guinee noted that REITs have outperformed the broader equity market by 300 to 500 basis points so far this year in a declining interest rate environment.

Green Bonds Popular With Investors, According to REIT Executives

Mark Peternell and Mike Mas of retail REIT Regency Centers (NYSE: REG), joined REIT.com for a video interview at NAREIT’s 2015 Leader in the Light Working Forum in Reston, Va.

Peternell, the company’s vice president of sustainability, said going green can serve as a “competitive differentiator” for REITs. Regency Centers started $ 240 million worth of development and redevelopment projects in 2014.

Banker Sees REIT Green Bonds as “Natural Byproduct” of Sustainability Commitment

Shawn Cepeda, managing director of debt capital markets at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, joined REIT.com for a video interview at NAREIT’s 2015 Leader in the Light Working Forum in Reston, Va.

According to Cepeda, sustainability for most companies is comprised of environmental responsibility, social responsibility and corporate governance. When Bank of America Merrill Lynch makes a decision about financing sustainability, “we’re really focused on the environmental element of the sustainability umbrella,” according to Cepeda.

GRESB Seeing Increased Interest in Green Bonds from Institutional Investors

Nils Kok, founder and executive director of the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB), joined REIT.com for a video interview at NAREIT’s 2015 Leader in the Light Working Forum in Reston, Va.

GRESB is an industry-driven organization that assesses the sustainability performance of real estate portfolios around the globe. Kok noted that during the past 18 months, he has observed an increasing interest in “green bonds” from fixed-income investors. The proceeds from these bonds are used to finance sustainability initiatives.
