GRESB Data Shows Broad Improvement in Real Estate ESG Performance

Real estate companies and funds are showing improvement across all aspects of environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance, according to the 2016 Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) Real Estate, Developer and Debt assessments.

“The global real estate sector is working to manage its carbon footprint, build resilience in the face of climate change and respond to more stringent environmental regulations,” said Nils Kok, CEO of GRESB.

Senior Housing Properties Trust CEO Sees Broad Benefits from Demographic Trends

David Hegarty, president and COO of Senior Housing Properties Trust (NYSE: SNH), joined REIT.com for a CEO Spotlight video interview at REITWorld 2014: NAREIT’s Annual Convention for All Things REIT at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis.

Hegarty explained that, despite its name, almost 50 percent of the company’s assets consist of medical office buildings, with senior housing accounting for the remaining portion. The majority of the properties, which are spread across 39 states, are triple net-leased.

The total return on the FTSE NAREIT All REITs Index decreased 5.6 percent, but Case stressed that September was “a difficult month for all investors…there was no place to hide last month in investing.”

The total return on the FTSE NAREIT All REITs Index dipped 0.2 percent in July, although the decline was smaller than the 1.4 percent fall in the S&P 500 Index. For the year through July 31, the FTSE NAREIT All REITs Index had a total return of 15.9 percent, compared with a 5.7 percent gain by the S&P 500.
