REITs Playing Leading Role in Development, Deloitte Analyst Says

Bob O’Brien, partner and U.S. real estate services leader at Deloitte, joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWise 2016: NAREIT’s Law, Accounting and Finance Conference at the Marriott Marquis in Washington, D.C.

O’Brien said he is seeing an increase in development activity for apartment buildings, office buildings, hotels and distribution facilities.

“REITs are playing a big role in development activity,” O’Brien said.

Deloitte Analyst Says Chinese Interest in U.S. Real Estate Remains Firm

Bob O’Brien, partner and U.S. real estate services leader at Deloitte, joined REIT.com for a video interview during REITWise 2015: NAREIT’s Law, Accounting and Finance Conference held in Phoenix.

O’Brien discussed the rise in Chinese foreign investment , as well as the possibilities for a REIT regime in China.

O’Brien noted that Chinese investment in the United States has increased about seven-fold in the past five years, and real estate accounts for a significant portion of that growth.

Deloitte Partner Discusses Impact of FASB Rules on REITs

Chris Dubrowski, partner at Deloitte LLP, joined REIT.com for a video interview during REITWise 2015: NAREIT’s Law, Accounting and Finance Conference held in Phoenix.

Dubrowski outlined how companies are preparing for the new revenue recognition standard issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB). He acknowledged the difficulty in understanding new rules until they are applied to actual transactions. “I’m telling people to think about the different ways you recognize revenue within a REIT and think about whether those might be impacted,” he said.

O’Brien was asked to comment on the changing nature of real estate as witnessed within the REIT industry. O’Brien noted that a whole series of alternative or non-traditional REITs have come to the market over the past few years in segments including timber, cell towers and data centers.
