Lodging REIT LaSalle Hotel Properties Focused on Organic Growth

Michael Barnello, president and CEO of LaSalle Hotel Properties (NYSE: LHO), joined REIT.com for a CEO Spotlight video interview at REITWorld 2016: NAREIT’s Annual Convention for All Things REIT at the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge.

Barnello reflected on the current state of the lodging sector. During the last couple of years, “supply has been increasing while demand has not been as strong,” he said. While Barnello expects the trend to continue into 2017, he stressed that this is a normal development in the sector.

Hotel REITs Undermined by Weak Business Travel, Green Street Analyst Says

Lukas Hartwich, senior analyst at Green Street Advisors, joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWeek 2016: NAREIT’s Investor Forum at the Waldorf Astoria New York.

Hartwich discussed the factors contributing to lagging fundamentals in the lodging sector. The most prominent one, he said, is weakness in business travel and spending. Hartwich pointed out that business travel accounts for about 75 percent of demand for lodging REITs.

Neil Shah, president and COO of Hersha Hospitality Trust (NYSE: HT), joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWorld 2015: NAREIT’s Annual Convention for All Things REIT at the Wynn Las Vegas.

Shah said fundamentals within the hotel REIT’s core markets are especially solid.

“We have very strong demand fundamentals and very little supply. We feel that it’s one of the best times to be a hotel owner,” he said.

Jon Bortz, chairman, president and CEO of Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (NYSE: PEB), joined REIT.com for a CEO Spotlight video interview during REITWeek 2015: NAREIT’s Investor Forum, held in New York.

Bortz described the operating fundamentals for hotels in U.S. gateway markets as “terrific.” The recovery in the economy has been positive for the hotel sector, and business and leisure travel rates have held steady, according to Bortz.
