Stefan Tucker, a partner at law firm Venable LLP, joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWise 2016: NAREIT’s Law, Accounting and Finance Conference at the Marriott Marquis in Washington, D.C.
Tucker highlighted some of the more significant tax developments in the area of partnerships for the real estate industry and developers.

Kate Courtis, senior vice president for taxation at General Growth Properties, Inc. (NYSE: GGP), joined REIT.com for a video interview during REITWise 2015: NAREIT’s Law, Accounting and Finance Conference held in Phoenix.
Courtis moderated a panel at REITWise looking at the partnership tax issues encountered by REITs. Some of the issues the panel discussed included disguised sales and beneficial elections.
“When [REITs] want to recycle capital, retention of that capital is critical,” Courtis said.
Sam Melehani, partner at PwC, joined REIT.com for a video interview during REITWise 2015: NAREIT’s Law, Accounting and Finance Conference held in Phoenix.
Melehani commented on two recent developments at the state level regarding the taxation of REITs. First, he noted that proposed legislation in Hawaii to abolish the dividends paid deduction for REITs has been deferred, pending further study. “Hopefully they’ll decide that there’s a lot more benefit to the REIT than that they get a dividends paid deduction,” he said.
Shari Thakady, director of tax at Ramco-Gershenson Properties Trust (NYSE: RPT), joined REIT.com for a video interview during REITWise 2014: NAREIT’s Law, Accounting and Finance Conference held in Boca Raton, Fla.
Ramco-Gershenson’s primary business is the ownership and management of multi-anchor shopping centers in strategic metropolitan markets throughout the Eastern, Midwestern and Central United States.
Thakady was asked to comment on the range of tax issues facing REIT tax directors and the ones causing the most concern.
