New York REIT Cancels Merger with JBG

New York REIT, Inc. (NYSE: NYRT) and private real estate firm The JBG Companies announced Aug. 2 that they have agreed to terminate their previously announced merger due to a lack of shareholder support for the deal.

Instead, New York REIT will adopt a plan of selling individual assets, the company said.

“Investors were clear in their preference for a liquidation to generate near-term cash,” said Matt Kelly, managing partner of JBG.

Merger Has Apple Hospitality REIT Planting Seeds for More Success

Since its listing on the New York Stock Exchange a year ago this month, there’s been little let-up in activity at Richmond, Virginia-based Apple Hospitality REIT, Inc. (NYSE: APLE).

Last month, the lodging REIT announced plans to acquire public non-listed REIT Apple REIT Ten, Inc. in a deal valued at approximately $ 1.3 billion. Apple REIT Ten was formed by Glade Knight, the executive chairman of Apple Hospitality. The merger would create one of the largest lodging REITs in the country.

Essex Property Trust CEO Hails Results of Merger

Michael Schall, president and CEO of Essex Property Trust (NYSE: ESS), joined REIT.com for a CEO Spotlight video interview at REITWorld 2014: NAREIT’s Annual Convention for All Things REIT at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis.

Earlier this year, Essex completed its purchase of another apartment REIT, BRE Properties. Schall talked about the status of the efforts to integrate the two companies.

“I would certainly say that acquiring a large company is a challenging process, but it’s going very well,” Schall noted.

Essex Property Trust Joins S&P 500; Completes Merger with BRE

West Coast multifamily REIT Essex Property Trust, Inc. (NYSE: ESS) joined the S&P 500 Index on April 1, making it the 18th REIT to be included in the index.

Previously, Essex Property Trust was included in the S&P MidCap 400 Index.

Essex Property Trust is the first REIT to be added to the S&P 500 Index this year. Two apartment REITs, General Growth Properties, Inc. (NYSE: GGP) and Macerich (NYSE: MAC), were added last year.

MAA Chief Says Merger with Colonial Properties Proceeding Smoothly

Eric Bolton, chairman and CEO of apartment REIT MAA (NYSE: MAA), joined REIT.com for a video interview at the St. Regis Hotel in Washington, D.C. during NAREIT’s 2014 Washington Leadership Forum.

Last year MAA merged with Colonial Properties Trust. Bolton was asked to describe the progress of the merger.

“The process is going very well. We’re well into the integration of the back office systems. We expect to have almost all the systems complete by the time we get to late spring, early summer,” Bolton explained.
