QTS CEO Says Data Security a “Never-Ending Battle” for Data Center REITs

Chad Williams, chairman and CEO of data center REIT QTS Realty Trust, Inc. (NYSE:QTS), joined REIT.com for a CEO Spotlight video interview at REITWorld 2016: NAREIT’s Annual Convention for All Things REIT at the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge.

When it comes to preventing cyberattacks, Williams said QTS differentiates itself from other providers through its fully integrated services platform “that contemplates the risk around cybersecurity and compliance for our customers.”

Buller received NAREIT’s 2016 Industry Achievement Award at the convention.

Buller offered his thoughts on how Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election impacted the real estate market. For example, he noted that health care REITs are facing uncertainty over the potential direction of public policy.

REITs Under Pressure in October

In the latest edition of Quick Study, Brad Case, NAREIT’s senior vice president for research and industry information, said that despite market weakness in October, economic fundamentals continue to support the sector.

The total returns of the FTSE/NAREIT All REIT Index dropped 4.9 percent in October, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.8 percent.

“It was a very poor month in October,” Case observed. “The last three months have been weak for investors in all segments of the equity markets,” he added.

REIT share prices came under pressure in October with concerns of rising interest rates bearing down on the market, according to analysts. However, REIT returns continued to lead the S&P 500 through the first 10 months of the year.

Capital Markets Receptive to REITs

In the latest episode of The REIT Report: NAREIT’s Weekly Podcast, Keven Lindemann of S&P Global Market Intelligence discussed REITs’ capital raising actives in 2016.

REITs raised 11 percent more capital through the end of 2016’s third quarter than they did in the year-earlier period.

“That’s certainly an indication that the companies in the [REIT] industry have healthy access to the capital markets,” Lindemann said.
