Incoming Extra Space CEO Says REIT’s Growth Slowing to Sustainable Level

Joe Margolis, chief investment officer, executive vice president and incoming CEO of Extra Space Storage Inc. (NYSE: EXR), joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWorld 2016: NAREIT’s Annual Convention for All Things REIT at the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge.

Margolis joined Extra Space in 2015 and will succeed Spencer Kirk as CEO of the company at the beginning of 2017.

Margolis commented on the transition process, joking that he and Kirk have been “joined at the hip for about 18 months now.”

In October, Extra Space completed a $ 1.3 billion acquisition of SmartStop Self Storage, Inc., a public non-listed REIT. Extra Space acquired 122 stores and assumed the property management of 43 stores previously managed by SmartStop.

Sector Focus: Industrial REITs Could Benefit from Increased Space Demands in 2015

Demand for industrial space is expected to remain healthy for the rest of 2015, supported by solid economic fundamentals, rising consumer demand and the continued expansion of e-commerce, according to market watchers.

A report from the NAIOP Research Foundation forecasts net demand for industrial space could grow 8 percent in 2015, up from 224 million square feet in 2014.
