Adam Emmerich, partner at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen and Katz, joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWise 2016: NAREIT’s Law, Accounting and Finance Conference at the Marriott Marquis in Washington, D.C.
Emmerich participated on a panel at REITWise that looked at privatizations in the REIT industry and the lessons learned from the last privatization wave.
Emmerich noted that one of the lessons that the investing world has learned more broadly is that leverage can be “very, very serious.”
Greg Ross, audit partner at Grant Thornton LLP, joined REIT.com for a video interview during REITWise 2015: NAREIT’s Law, Accounting and Finance Conference held in Phoenix.
According to Ross, one of the biggest changes in financial reporting that he has witnessed is the change related to fair value accounting.
“Investors want it, so there are a lot more items on the balance sheet today with fair value implications,” Ross said.
Jim Hanks, a senior partner at Venable LLP, joined REIT.com for a video interview during REITWise 2015: NAREIT’s Law, Accounting and Finance Conference held in Phoenix.
Hanks discussed the growing importance of succession planning.
“I see it as a major item on a continuing basis, as it should be,” he said.
Hanks highlighted a number of aspects to succession planning, including a focus on short-term and long-term planning. “Boards should be doing both,” he said.
Joshua Kagan, senior fellow with the Carbon War Room and director of business development at the Clean Fund, joined REIT.com for a video interview at NAREIT’s 2015 Leader in the Light Working Forum in Reston, Va.
The Carbon War Room is an entrepreneurial non-profit organization intended to use market forces to tackle climate change. The Clean Fund, meanwhile, provides financing that allows energy efficiency, water efficiency and renewable energy projects to be repaid through a voluntary property assessment.
