Steven Marks, managing director with Fitch Ratings, joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWorld 2016: NAREIT’s Annual Convention for All Things REIT at the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge.
Marks stated that development risk across most of the REIT industry is “pretty well boxed and under control.” According to Marks, development risk in terms of the cost to complete projects relative to gross asset values has declined in recent years.
In the latest edition of Quick Study, Brad Case, NAREIT’s senior vice president for research and industry information, said that despite market weakness in October, economic fundamentals continue to support the sector.
The total returns of the FTSE/NAREIT All REIT Index dropped 4.9 percent in October, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.8 percent.
“It was a very poor month in October,” Case observed. “The last three months have been weak for investors in all segments of the equity markets,” he added.
Record box-office revenues, long waits at golf entertainment venues and growth in charter schools all point to higher earnings at EPR Properties (NYSE: EPR) this year, according to new president and CEO Greg Silvers.
Silvers succeeds David Brain, who co-founded the company and served as its president and CEO from 1999 until earlier this year. For his part, Silvers has held several positions since joining EPR in 1998, most recently as executive vice president and COO.

In an interview with an Arabic-language news Web site, Al Arabiya, Hossein Karroubi, who is politically active, said that the security forces told him that other family members, except his mother, were also barred from seeing his father. The elder Mr. Karroubi and another government critic, Mir Hussein Moussavi, had submitted a formal request to the government to hold the rally on Feb. 14. Opposition Web sites have also reported the arrest of a number of people associated with the two opposition leaders. On Wednesday night, Taghi Rahmani, an activist close to Mr. Karroubi, and Mohammad-Hossein Sharifzadegan, a former welfare minister and an adviser to Mr. Moussavi, were arrested at their homes by Iran’s security forces.
