Poll: REITs Expected to Beat S&P 500 Index in Next Year

Real estate industry professionals expect REITs to outperform the S&P 500 Index during the next 12 months, according to a poll from BMO Capital Markets.

The poll of  attendees at the BMO Capital Markets 10th Annual North American Real Estate Conference in Chicago shows that 45 percent of institutional investors expect REITs to outperform the S&P 500 Index by more than 3 percent in the next year, while 35 percent said REITs could outperform the benchmark by as much as 10 percent.

Quick Study: REIT Market Starts Year Off Right

In the latest edition of Quick Study, Brad Case, NAREIT’s senior vice president for research and industry information, highlighted a “very strong month for REIT investors” to start 2015.

The FTSE NAREIT All REITs Index climbed 5.6 percent in the first month of the year, while the S&P 500 fell 3 percent during the same period. Case noted those returns were in line with longer-term trends.

Thomas Nolan, chairman and CEO of Spirit Realty Capital (NYSE: SRC), joined REIT.com for a CEO Spotlight video interview at REITWorld 2014: NAREIT’s Annual Convention for All Things REIT at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis.

Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Spirit Realty Capital was formed in 2003 to purchase single-tenant, net lease properties. The company’s portfolio consists of approximately 2,100 properties across 48 states.

Survey Finds Commercial Real Estate Executives Overwhelmingly Optimistic About Next Year

Commercial real estate executives are overwhelmingly bullish on the outlook for their industry through the next 12 months, according to a survey conducted by international law firm DLA Piper.

DLA Piper’s survey, which was conducted in August, showed 89 percent of executives are upbeat for the coming year, compared with 85 percent a year ago and 30 percent in 2011. The survey was completed by 158 respondents, including CEOs, COOs, CFOs and other senior executives and real estate professionals.
