Texas Christian Team Leads Real Estate Portfolio Challenge

Students from Texas Christian University are currently leading the Real Confidence University Portfolio Challenge, a year-long competition featuring teams from 15 universities seeking to create the best-performing portfolio from a mixture of real estate investments.

NAREIT has partnered in the challenge with the National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries (NCREIF).  Altus Group Ltd., a provider of independent advisory services, is managing the project.

American Residential Properties says REIT Focused on Stabilizing Portfolio

Stephen Schmitz, chairman and CEO of American Residential Properties (NYSE: ARPI), and Laurie Hawkes, the company’s president and COO, joined REIT.com for a video interview during REITWeek 2015: NAREIT’s Investor Forum, held in New York.

American Residential Properties acquires, renovates, leases and manages single-family properties across 13 states.

Schmitz discussed whether the company continues to see acquisitions as the most important generator of strategic value.

Apartment REIT MAA Pruning Portfolio

Eric Bolton, chairman and CEO of MAA (NYSE: MAA), joined REIT.com for a CEO Spotlight video interview during REITWeek 2015: NAREIT’s Investor Forum, held in New York.

MAA focuses on the acquisition, development and management of apartment properties throughout the Southeast and Southwest regions of the United States. Bolton said the company is continuing to see positive rent growth across its portfolio.

Portfolio Adviser Says REITs Improve Long-Term Returns

In the latest episode of the NAREIT Podcast, Creede Murphy, vice president and investment analyst with American Assets Capital Advisers, discussed his firm’s research on REITs’ role in optimized investment portfolios.

Murphy said performance data show REITs have “typically” outperformed major asset classes over “just about any [long-term] time period.” REITs do have “slightly higher” volatility than stocks, according to Murphy.

Unibail-Rodamco Still Reshaping Retail Portfolio

Jaap Tonckens, chief financial officer of Unibail-Rodamco (Paris: UL.PA), joined REIT.com for a video interview during REITWeek 2015: NAREIT’s Investor Forum, held in New York.

Unibail-Rodamco began work in 2009 to reshape its portfolio and focus on large shopping centers located in wealthy and densely populated areas of major European cities. Tonckens said that although the company has exceeded its stated intentions in terms of culling the portfolio, the process is ongoing.
