John Forester, director of energy and sustainability at REIT Management & Research LLC, joined REIT.com for a video interview at NAREIT’s 2015 Leader in the Light Working Forum in Reston, Va.

REIT Management & Research is a private company that manages publicly traded REITs. Forester noted that the company has sought to improve the process of collecting and aggregating data across its asset base by investing in a new platform that allows for the collection of information “other than what is typically shown on an invoice.”

Forest City Enterprises Reveals Plans to Operate as a REIT

Forest City Enterprises, Inc., (NYSE: FCEA) said Jan. 13 that its Board of Directors has approved a plan for the company to operate as a REIT beginning in 2016.

Publicly traded since 1960, Forest City currently has C-Corp status and is considered a real estate operating company (REOC). The company’s portfolio is focused on urban real estate assets in the office, retail and apartment sectors.

The announcement boosted the price of Forest City stock. After closing Jan. 13 at $ 22.21, Forest City shares closed at $ 24.72 on Jan. 14.

INVESCO Fund Manager highlights broader acceptance of REIT investment

Paul Curbo, portfolio manager at INVESCO Realty Advisors, joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWorld 2014: NAREIT’s Annual Convention for All Things REIT at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis.

Curbo highlighted the biggest changes he has seen in the real estate sector during the last two decades.

“Real estate has become an accepted investment class. Twenty years ago, we often had to explain the merits of investing in REITs,” he said.

The benefits of REIT income, diversification and total returns have now become apparent, Curbo noted.

David Auerbach, institutional trader with Esposito Securities, looked back at the REIT market in 2014 and ahead to 2015 on the latest edition of the NAREIT Podcast.

With the year coming to a close, Auerbach discussed some of the biggest developments in the REIT market in 2014. He described it as an “exciting year for REIT investors.” He said the moves made by The Blackstone Group, including taking multiple real estate portfolios public, took center stage throughout the year.

BMO’s Decker Sees Room for Growth of U.S. REIT Market

Mark Decker Sr., vice chairman with BMO Capital Markets, joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWorld 2014: NAREIT’s Annual Convention for All Things REIT at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis.

Decker rebuffed the suggestion that the U.S. REIT market is approaching the upper limit of its growth. The universe of REITs in the United States will continue to expand as more sectors are added, according to Decker. He pointed to sectors such as data centers and farmland as examples of how the REIT approach to real estate investment will continue to grow.

Jeff Horowitz, global head of real estate, gaming and lodging at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWorld 2014: NAREIT’s Annual Convention for All Things REIT at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis.

Horowitz gave an overview of REIT capital market activity in 2014. According to Horowitz, REITs have raised about $ 55 billion this year, comprised of $ 25 billion in equity, $ 2 billion in preferred stock and the remainder in unsecured debt.

Investment Strategist Highlights Fundamentals Driving REIT Share Gains

Glenn Mueller, a University of Denver professor and real estate investment strategist at Dividend Capital Group, joined REIT.com for a video interview at REITWorld 2014: NAREIT’s Annual Convention for All Things REIT at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis.

Mueller stressed that job growth has been a key indicator for real estate investors to consider. He explained that in 2014, average monthly employment growth averaged more than 200,000 jobs, compared with about 100,000 per month in the prior few years.
