Barden Gale, vice chairman with Mack Real Estate Group (MREG), joined REIT.com for a video interview during REITWeek 2014: NAREIT’s Investor Forum, held in New York.

Gale joined MREG in October. The company is primarily involved in developing multifamily residential rental projects in urban markets. Gale noted that the firm is catering to renters in the millennial generation and “empty nesters” whose children have moved out of the home.

Portfolio Manager Sees Sustained Period of Low Interest Rates and Supply

Scott Crowe, global portfolio manager at Resource Real Estate, joined REIT.com for a video interview during REITWeek 2014: NAREIT’s Investor Forum, held in New York.

Crowe was asked about the impact of the slow economic recovery on asset allocation and where investors are most focused right now. Crowe explained that a slow pace of recovery is actually good for real estate because it means that interest rates are going to stay low “and there are not enough animal spirits to really start development.”

Sternlicht, chairman of single-family home REIT Starwood Waypoint Residential Trust (NYSE: SWAY), spoke on April 23 at the Real Estate Luminaries Series at Georgetown University. He discussed the company’s foray into a new segment of the REIT market.

O’Brien was asked to comment on the changing nature of real estate as witnessed within the REIT industry. O’Brien noted that a whole series of alternative or non-traditional REITs have come to the market over the past few years in segments including timber, cell towers and data centers.

Good was asked to comment on the movement among a number of REITs to spin off portfolios of assets into separate companies. This occurred most recently when Vornado Realty Trust (NYSE: VNO) announced that it would spin off 81 strip shopping center assets and four malls from its portfolio into a new REIT.
