Two questions about the link: operator

On February 26, 2009, Google software engineer Matt Cutts collected questions on Google Moderator and answered many of them on video. Sven Heß from Wiesbaden, Germany asked: How accurate is Google’s backlink-check (link:…)? Are all nofollow backlinks filtered out or why does Yahoo/MSN show quite more backlink results? San Diego Tim from San Diego asked: If you have inbound links from reputable sites but those sites do not show up in a link:webname.com search, does this mean you are not getting any ‘credit’ in Google’s eyes for having inbound links?

  1. If i have many backlinks to my site but im only getting a couple to show up on my google webmasters links to my site page. Does this mean they haven’t found them yet? How can I help google find them faster?

  2. This might sound dumb, but where in GWT can you check the “full dump” of inbound links? Under Index Stats I see the link: query but it returns the same results as compared to doing the search when not logged into GWT. Am I not looking in the right place?

Meanwhile, a search query I’ve always liked for checking backlinks is:

    “mysite[DOT]com” -site:mysite[DOT]com

    (replace [DOT] obviously)

But I imagine this doesn’t tell me which ones Google is actually crediting to my site.

  3. How about relevancy? Would it be great if we can see more relevant links at the top of the link: operator search results? Or if possible in the GWT backlink search?

  4. also regarding question #2 – what if the good links known to you do not show up in GWT? Is there a way to tell GWT about links you’re stoked and proud of?

  5. The way random links are reported via the public link: command does make sense, as explained. However the real issue is links reported privately in GWT – webmasters assume those are considered legit and try for more of same.

Why? Feedback is nominally assumed to be positive. Obviously, if goog wanted to discourage certain links, they could best do that by not recognizing them in GWT.

  6. I like the update on meta keyword tags vs.meta description tags. Since Google reworked their algorithm, the relevancy of meta keywords decreased and descriptions are still important to help searcher determine relevancy and click on results.

  8. One thing that I think is important to differentiate between is B2B and B2C when dealing with SEO..for example for some B2B companies creating links in to the site from other resources such as facebook or blogs can be more difficult since the clients of these companies may be less likely to check these sites. Looking forward to learning more about SEO, very interesting subject!

  10. The ranking process
    – Crawling
    – Indexing
    – Ranking

    Credible websites meaning?

    Untitled.html

Title of the page is still the most important part because people look for topics that are related to your title tag and not just your site. people don’t go to a site and look for a topic and go on google search and then type it in.

  11. It is important to understand that there is a different between what search engines can understand vs. human users. Search engines can only understand text and links. The more content the better ranking you can have.

  15. It is good to now that meta tags are now irrelevant to increase your ranking. They are still good to let people find our web page, but are no longer part of Google’s algorithm
