L’asse centrale attraversa tutto il complesso per un percorso di oltre tre chilometri: dall’elegante piazzale di accesso, che doveva essere collegato a Napoli da un rettilineo viale alberato, interseca il palazzo e il retrostante giardino e parterres, per proseguire quindi, oltre la scenografica cascata, inerpicandosi lungo il pendio del colle e fino alla sua cima, con una spettacolare via d’acqua alimentata dall’acquedotto Carolino, capolavoro dell’ingegneria idraulica, equiparato a quelli della Roma imperiale.
